STARZ ENCORE Classic Review: Movies, Schedule, Where to Watch & Is It Worth It?

I watched Encore Classic quite a bit years ago, although it has probably been at least a decade since I spent much time with the channel. I remember it as a place for older movies and television, which made the word “Classic” seem like a pretty good fit.

Looking at STARZ ENCORE Classic again in 2026, however, the channel is not quite what I remembered.

It is still part of the STARZ ENCORE family and still offers the commercial-free, scheduled movie-channel experience longtime viewers may recognize. What has changed is the meaning of “Classic.” If you are expecting a steady lineup of black-and-white films and Golden Age Hollywood, you may be surprised. Today’s schedule can include plenty of movies from the 1990s, 2000s, and even 2010s.

That does not necessarily make STARZ ENCORE Classic a worse channel. It just makes the name a little misleading for viewers who remember what Encore Classic used to be—or who have a more traditional idea of what qualifies as a classic movie.

In this STARZ ENCORE Classic review, I will look at the movies and programming, where you can watch the channel, how it compares with other movie channels, and whether it is worth having in your TV lineup.

What Is STARZ ENCORE Classic?

STARZ ENCORE Classic is a premium linear movie channel in the STARZ ENCORE family. Unlike an on-demand streaming service, it follows a traditional TV schedule: movies air at set times throughout the day, and you can watch live or record them with a DVR if your provider supports it.

The channel is commercial-free, which remains one of its biggest advantages over basic cable movie channels.

Encore Classic launched in 2013, replacing Encore Love. Its original programming leaned more heavily toward older movies and classic television, which helps explain why longtime viewers may remember it differently than it appears today.

Over the years, the channel’s definition of “classic” has broadened considerably. While older movies are still part of the lineup, STARZ ENCORE Classic now features films from several decades rather than focusing strictly on traditional Hollywood classics.

STARZ ENCORE Action is another movie-focused channel in the same family.

What Movies Are on STARZ ENCORE Classic?

Despite its name, STARZ ENCORE Classic is not limited to Golden Age Hollywood or black-and-white films. Its current schedule stretches across several decades and includes plenty of movies from the 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s.

Recent examples have included Tucker: The Man and His Dream, The Stepford Wives, Love, Rosie, Miss Julie, and Curve.

That makes STARZ ENCORE Classic less of a traditional classic-film channel and more of a destination for older library movies and familiar favorites from previous decades.

The lineup covers a variety of genres, including drama, comedy, romance, thrillers, and action. Since the schedule changes regularly, it is best to check several days of listings rather than subscribe based on a particular movie or lineup.

Is STARZ ENCORE Classic Really a Classic Movie Channel?

Yes, but with a much broader definition of “classic” than many viewers may expect.

STARZ ENCORE Classic is not primarily devoted to Golden Age Hollywood, black-and-white films, or historically important cinema. Instead, it mixes older movies with plenty of titles from the 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s.

That is noticeably different from how I remember Encore Classic more than a decade ago, when the channel seemed to lean more heavily toward older programming.

If your idea of classic movies means films from the 1930s through the 1960s, this probably is not the channel you are expecting. If you enjoy familiar library movies from several decades, however, the name makes a little more sense.

Does STARZ ENCORE Classic Have Commercials?

STARZ ENCORE Classic is a premium movie channel, so its movies air without traditional commercial interruptions.

That is one of the channel’s biggest advantages over basic cable movie networks. You can watch a movie from beginning to end without frequent ad breaks stretching the runtime.

If you already receive STARZ ENCORE Classic as part of a premium package, the commercial-free presentation adds real value.

STARZ ENCORE Classic Schedule

STARZ ENCORE Classic operates as a 24-hour linear channel, with movies scheduled throughout the day and overnight.

The lineup changes regularly, so one day’s schedule may look very different from the next. If you are considering the channel, it is worth checking several days of listings to get a better idea of the movie selection.

A DVR can also make STARZ ENCORE Classic more useful by letting you record interesting titles and watch them later instead of waiting for a convenient airtime.

Where Can You Watch STARZ ENCORE Classic?

STARZ ENCORE Classic is available through several traditional TV providers and live TV streaming services, although the exact package and channel lineup can vary.

ProviderAvailability
DISHChannel 346
DIRECTVChannel 537
Sling TVSTARZ add-on
PhiloSTARZ add-on
FuboSTARZ add-on; verify the Classic feed
SpectrumAvailability and channel number vary by market

DISH and DIRECTV remain straightforward options for traditional satellite viewers, while Sling TV and Philo offer STARZ ENCORE Classic through their premium STARZ packages.

Fubo also offers a STARZ add-on, but I would check your local channel lineup before subscribing specifically for STARZ ENCORE Classic.

Since provider packages and prices can change, always confirm the current lineup before signing up.

The same applies to related channels such as STARZ ENCORE Black.

STARZ ENCORE Classic and the STARZ App

STARZ ENCORE Classic and the STARZ app are not the same thing.

STARZ ENCORE Classic is a scheduled live TV channel, while the STARZ app is primarily an on-demand streaming service with movies and shows from across the STARZ library.

If you prefer turning on a channel and watching whatever is playing, STARZ ENCORE Classic provides that traditional TV experience. If you would rather choose exactly what to watch and when to watch it, the STARZ app is more convenient.

Before subscribing directly to STARZ specifically for this channel, verify that the live STARZ ENCORE Classic feed is included with your plan.

STARZ ENCORE Classic vs. Other Classic Movie Channels

STARZ ENCORE Classic is not the only option for viewers who enjoy older movies. Two useful comparisons are TCM and RetroPlex.

TCM is the better fit for viewers specifically interested in Golden Age Hollywood, film history, and older classics. RetroPlex is closer to STARZ ENCORE Classic, with a broader library of older movies.

STARZ ENCORE Classic stands out for mixing several decades together, making it more of a general library-movie channel than a strict classic-cinema destination.

CINEVAULT: Classics is another option if you enjoy older movies.

STARZ ENCORE Classic Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Commercial-free movies
  • 24-hour scheduled movie channel
  • Wide range of genres and decades
  • Good fit for viewers who enjoy older library titles
  • Often included with several other STARZ and STARZ ENCORE channels
  • Works well with a DVR

Cons

  • The word “Classic” can be misleading
  • Many movies are newer than traditional classic-film fans may expect
  • Live viewing means following a set schedule
  • Repeats are inevitable
  • Availability depends on your provider and package

Who Is STARZ ENCORE Classic Best For?

STARZ ENCORE Classic is best for viewers who enjoy older library movies but are not looking exclusively for traditional Hollywood classics.

It is a good fit if you like movies from several decades, prefer watching without commercial interruptions, and enjoy the simplicity of turning on a scheduled movie channel rather than searching through an app.

The channel makes even more sense if you already receive it as part of a STARZ package.

If your idea of classic cinema is mainly black-and-white films, Golden Age Hollywood, or film-history programming, however, TCM may be a better match.

If you are looking for something more family-friendly, you may also want to read my STARZ ENCORE Family Review: Movies, Schedule, Where to Watch & Is It Worth It?. It focuses on the family-oriented side of the STARZ ENCORE lineup and may be a better fit for households with children or grandchildren.

Is STARZ ENCORE Classic Worth It?

STARZ ENCORE Classic makes the most sense as part of a larger STARZ package rather than as the sole reason to subscribe.

Its commercial-free movies and traditional live-channel format are appealing, especially if you enjoy library titles from several decades. The biggest drawback is that the word “Classic” may lead some viewers to expect much older films than the channel actually airs.

If you already receive STARZ ENCORE Classic, it is a useful movie channel to have. If you are considering subscribing specifically for it, check the current schedule first to make sure the lineup matches your idea of classic movies.

Final Thoughts

STARZ ENCORE Classic is not quite the channel I remember from more than a decade ago. I still think of Encore Classic as a place for older movies and classic television, while today’s version includes far more movies from the 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s than I remember.

That broader lineup is not necessarily a bad thing. The channel still offers something I like: a simple, commercial-free movie channel where you can turn on the TV and see what is playing.

The key is knowing what “Classic” means before subscribing. If you enjoy familiar movies from several decades, STARZ ENCORE Classic can be a worthwhile part of a larger STARZ package. If you are looking mainly for Golden Age Hollywood and much older films, you may want to look elsewhere.
